Self portrait

I was raised in central Ohio in farm country. As a child, I was always making stuff. Our house was filled with traditional folk games, music, fine crafts from all over the world.  Now, my life by the sea mashes up with my childhood experiences.

My ceramic studies began in high school. I pursued a BA degree in Ceramic Studio Arts at Ohio State University and Kent State University. My early instructors were John Glick, Ken Ferguson, Joanne Hiakawa and Kirk Mangus.

My work is informally speaking about our inter-connectedness with others. It is emotive and focuses on qualities in human nature. It’s often described as quirky. I make characters real or imagined. Common themes are climate change and accepting others.

Artist Statement

I am a visual artist, specializing in both painting and ceramics. My work is informally speaking about our inter-connectedness with others. It is emotive and focuses on qualities in human nature.

I use hand building techniques of coiling and slabs to construct hollow forms. Several oxidation firings finish the stoneware. Color finishes and texture are critical elements. Finishes are a mix of oxides, underglazes, glazes, lusters and paint.

New characters often come to me as a feeling. I don’t know what they look like, but I have a sense of them. If it’s a standing figure I begin with the shoes. I like figures clothed to add more context and elements of the character’s personality. It’s their story that I’m after.

My major influences include a childhood home filled with traditional folk games, music, and fine crafts from all over the world.  Those experiences now mix with modern art, jazz and life by the ocean. They often appear in odd juxtaposed mash-ups. Seeing the youthful spirit in characters of all ages is a common theme. Climate change and adapting to it is creeping into my work. Artists who inspire me: Beth Cavener, Eudald De Juana Gorriz, Javier Marin, Gustav Vigeland.

As a child I created with a free spirit. In college formal training in realistic renderings in 2D and 3D materials began. I struggled to find my voice through all the rules. Working intuitively allows the best work to come out of me. Learning to trust myself again was the key. I enjoy working looser, letting more gestural energy remain.
